INITIATIVE TO CREATE AN INTERNATIONAL CYBERSECURITY AGENCY

INITIATIVE TO CREATE AN INTERNATIONAL CYBERSECURITY AGENCY MANAGED BY THE UNITED NATIONS

Although various cybersecurity organizations have been created at regional and local levels to combat the growing online attacks that have affected billions of people, major organizations and businesses across the globe, there is an urgent need to establish a United Nations-managed international cybersecurity agency (modeled on the International Atomic Energy Agency) to tackle the continuing government-organized cyberattacks, especially originating in the MENA region and in the north and east of those countries.

The agency can be created with at least three goals in mind: (1) to prevent government-sponsored cyberattacks or those from countries without a stable government and protect against the increasing sophistication of attacks; (2) prevent multiple and/or organized cybercrimes and cybersecurity threats (cyberpol); and (3) support the Internet and information infrastructure, develop cybersecurity advice and solutions, and help organizations that need assistance in responding to large-scale cybersecurity incidents (cyber relief organization).
